How to Maintain Your Robotic Pool Cleaner: A Perth Owner's Guide

Owning a robotic pool cleaner is one of the best investments you can make for your Perth swimming pool. Brands like Zodiac, Maytronics Dolphin, and Hayward build incredible machines that keep your pool sparkling clean with minimal effort. But like any piece of technology, your robot needs regular maintenance to perform at its best and last for years.

At Pool Robot Rescue, we repair hundreds of robotic pool cleaners every year across Perth. Here are our expert tips for keeping your robot in top condition.

1. Clean the Filter Basket After Every Use

The single most important maintenance task is cleaning your robot's filter basket or cartridge after each cleaning cycle. A clogged filter reduces suction power, forces the motor to work harder, and can lead to premature wear on internal components. Rinse the filter under a garden hose until the water runs clear, and let it dry before reinserting.

2. Inspect and Clean the Brushes Monthly

Your robot's brushes (often called PVA brushes or scrubbing brushes) are what physically scrub algae and debris from your pool surfaces. Over time, they wear down, become misshapen, or collect tangled hair and debris. Check them monthly and remove any wrapped material. Replace worn brushes every 12 to 18 months for optimal cleaning performance.

3. Check the Tracks and Wheels

Worn tracks are one of the most common issues we see in our Perth workshop. If your robot is slipping on walls, struggling to climb, or leaving uncleaned patches, the tracks may need replacement. Inspect them for cracks, stretching, or smooth spots. Most Zodiac and Dolphin tracks should be replaced every 2 to 3 years depending on usage.

4. Rinse Your Robot with Fresh Water

After each pool session, give your robot a quick rinse with fresh water from the garden hose. This removes chlorine residue and pool chemicals that can degrade rubber and plastic components over time. Pay special attention to the cable, power supply connector, and any exposed seals.

5. Store It Properly

Never leave your robotic pool cleaner sitting in the sun when not in use. UV exposure degrades plastic housings, cables, and rubber seals. Store your robot in a shaded area, ideally in its caddy or a covered storage spot. The power supply should always be kept in a dry, ventilated area away from direct sunlight and moisture.

6. Watch the Power Supply

The power supply (or transformer) is the brain of your robot. It regulates voltage and controls cleaning cycles. Keep it off the ground to prevent water damage, ensure it has adequate ventilation, and never cover it while operating. If you notice your robot behaving erratically, intermittent operation, or not starting at all, the power supply is often the culprit.

7. Mind the Cable

A tangled cable is more than an annoyance. Persistent tangles stress internal wiring and the swivel mechanism, leading to electrical faults over time. After each use, loosely coil the cable without tight kinks. If your cable consistently tangles during operation, the swivel may need servicing or the cable may have developed a memory twist that needs professional attention.

When to Call a Professional

While regular maintenance extends the life of your robot, some issues need expert attention. Bring your robot in for professional service if you notice any of the following: the robot is not moving at all or moves erratically, the power supply makes unusual noises or gets excessively hot, there is visible water inside the motor housing, the brushes spin slowly or not at all, or the robot consistently fails to complete cleaning cycles.
